USA has long been seen as a land full of opportunities, a melting pot of different ethnic groups, a nation of democracy and freedom, and a country of immigrants.
There are many ways to enable you and your family to legally immigrate to this beautiful country. In general, there are four big categories: (1) Employment (2) Investment (3) Family and (4) Others.
For the 1st category, usually one needs to have an employment offer by a U.S. employer who applies an employment visa on that person's behalf, then that that person can later apply to change his/her status to eventually obtain a green card. However, there are some exceptions which allow an applicant to get his/her green card without firstly being hired by a U.S. employer. For example, people with outstanding achievements in their fields (such as, an Olympic gold medal winner, etc.) and people with excellent accomplishments and/or advanced degree (such as, Ph.D. degree holders, excellent researchers, outstanding professors, or successful entrepreneurs).
For the 2nd category, two types are most commonly seen. One requires a minimum investment amount of US$1.8 million (known as EB5), which would enable an investor to obtain his/her green card. The other one (known as E2) only requires the investor to invest a "substantial amount of capital" but does not require a minimum dollar amount. However, E2 visa only applies to certain countries which have signed the treaty with the US. Instead of getting the green card, E2 investor and his/her family members (i.e. spouse and children under 21 years old) would be able to stay in the US only if he/she continues operate the business he/she has invested in.
For the 3rd category, direct family members of a U.S. citizen are allowed to apply for immigration. However, depend on the applicant's country of origin, it might take a considerably long waiting period before his/her application can be processed.
As for the 4th category, it allows people of certain special conditions to apply for immigration to the U.S., including such as, those who seek asylum, victims of human trafficking, etc.
